“The poverty rate in Maryland today is 9%. You know what it was in 1995? It was 9%. Because for low and moderate income Marylanders, we’ve seen stagnant wages for several decades while income inequality has been growing. In education, more than a quarter of middle school students in our state can’t read at a basic level. More than a third can’t do basic math. Those numbers are no different than they were twenty years ago. Everyone’s had a new plan to solve these problems, but it’s decades later and we’re still mired in the same problems that are harming the lives of millions of Marylanders. We need to do something very different, and that’s what I’m offering.”
