Bethesda, MD – With the Omicron variant bringing record COVID cases and threatening to overwhelm hospitals across Maryland, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jon Baron is calling on Gov. Larry Hogan to require booster shots for all state employees, teachers and healthcare workers — and to redefine the term “fully vaccinated” to include a booster shot.
“The Omicron variant has changed the rules of engagement with the pandemic, and we need to change with it. Booster shots have shown to be the most effective way of minimizing infections and preventing hospitalizations and death from this highly-contagious variant.
Other states have already taken these critical steps, and many more will likely follow. Maryland can either be one of the first states to adapt and get ahead of this wave — or we risk an uncontrollable surge of infections, hospitalizations and death. The choice is Governor Hogan’s.”– Jon Baron
Earlier this week, California announced that it would be requiring booster shots for all healthcare workers. Other states, including New Mexico, already include booster shots as part of vaccine requirements in key sectors. And Dr. Anthony Fauci has indicated that the CDC may change the federal definition of “fully vaccinated” to include booster shots.
With hospitals filling up and students set to return to class in January, Maryland can’t afford to wait. Governor Hogan must act now to keep Marylanders safe — and to stop this wave before it’s too late.
